Rheological properties of dense granular flows
Recent progresses in understanding the behavior of dense granular flows are presented. After presenting a bulk rheology of granular materials, I focus on the new developments to account for non-local effects, and on ongoing research concerning the surface rheology and the evolution of mechanical properties for heterogeneous systems.
متن کاملNonlocal rheological properties of granular flows near a jamming limit.
We study the rheology of sheared granular flows close to a jamming transition. We use the approach of partially fluidized theory (PFT) with a full set of equations extending the thin layer approximation derived previously for the description of the granular avalanches phenomenology. This theory provides a picture compatible with a local rheology at large shear rates [G. D. R. Midi, Eur. Phys. J...
متن کاملDense Granular Flows down Inclines
Dense granular flows down inclines continue to defy understanding. However, the last three decades have witnessed progress in techniques and approaches that have moved the field closer to achieving ab initio predictions of practical relevance. Difficulties arise for three principal reasons. First, because granular flows dissipate mechanical energy on the particle scale, regions featuring a subs...
متن کاملEffective boundary conditions for dense granular flows.
We derive an effective boundary condition for dense granular flow taking into account the effect of the heterogeneity of the force network on sliding friction dynamics. This yields an intermediate boundary condition which lies in the limit between no slip and Coulomb friction; two simple functions relating wall stress, velocity, and velocity variance are found from numerical simulations. Moreov...
متن کاملVelocity correlations in dense granular flows.
Velocity fluctuations of grains flowing down a rough inclined plane are experimentally studied. The grains at the free surface exhibit fluctuating motions, which are correlated over a few grain diameters. The characteristic correlation length is shown to depend on the inclination of the plane and not on the thickness of the flowing layer. This result strongly supports the idea that dense granul...
